    Weird fit. Extremely HOT.

    Weird fit. Extremely HOT.
I like the craftsmanship, materials, look, size, etc. Alas, HOWEVER, I don’t know who this is made for in terms of size but not for me. Admittedly, I’m a short squat Asian guy, and not a “typical” body, (although we Asians I guess make up the majority of the world’s population, but ya know what I mean), but my torso is long, and I have a 42” chest(see photo, and because I was wearing I couldn’t even put the myotape at the thickest part of my chest which goes to 43 when I inhale). But can see in photos, the chest strap is fully tightened and that was at its WIDEST point, and was still relatively loose. I can’t imagine most women, even most obese women, would be able to use this comfortably at all. The top of straps where they meet at the pack itself, are very close together also, and felt like they would eventually rub the sides of my neck, so can’t exactly see it working for large guys either. So, it’s like wouldn’t be right for anyone smaller than me but wouldn’t be right for a bigger person? And it’s uncomfortable for my size too. Does it make sense? The belt pocket was so far behind, no way to access the pocket while it is on my back; my arm can’t reach that far back to zip and unzip, so why have a belt pocket at all? I thought the shoulder strap pockets would be useful and I think they would be, at least that’s a pro but because they are thick, maybe it’s why there no space between for the chest strap to adjust? The shoulder load adjustment on top of the straps that are supposed to balance the load on my back? Well, I fully tightened those 100% and wanted to tighten MORE. Nope, basically useless. The back panel is soft and flexible like foam rubber, so that load distribution thing is 100% a gimmick imo. It simply does nothing but wrap/warp the top of the bag onto your shoulders. Basically every adjustment on the bag needed to be tightened nearly to max and still felt loose. I wear a 32” waist, but if I worse 30”, I’d have to tighten all the way. Whenever I exercise I can often get down to 28” waist, and if I were to, uh-uh, NOPE, wouldn’t be able to strap tight. Is a 42” chest small for a guy these days? I don’t know, but I don’t think? And curve on the back is flexible but didn’t fit really either. But, never mind all that, I could have lived with all that, the reason why I started the return process is this: (caveat, this is my first ever “HIKING” backpack, but I travel with a Tumi backpack 100% of the time and I traveled a lot so I can’t believe my opinion is merit less), the back foam “ventilation” is a NIGHTMARE! It’s horrible. I can’t describe how bad it is. When I tried on the backpack, it was completely empty. The foam INSULATES! The vents NOT only don’t work at all, they do the exact opposite of their intended purpose! As soon as I put the backpack on, within 1 single minute, I could feel my back heating up, and wanting to sweat! It would have been better to have nothing but plain nylon backing there. It was horribly uncomfortable. What a marketing scam. It’s like selling people placebo marketing. Just the t-shirt I had on completely blocks off all vents on the back panel. The undulating foam sponge completely blocks off all air and creates pockets of hot body-warmed air pockets on your back! Lol! Is this how all the “hiking” backpacks are? If so, it’s such blatant marketing shenanigans. Read basically the back panel is made of stuff like “pipe insulation,” read: “insulation!” Who thinks up this stuff???? I will look for a trampoline backed backpack after this. What I don’t get is, my generic travel-use Tumi with next to no padding never gets this hot fully loaded. (Scratching my head). And when you examine the vented portion on the back of the pack, you can see, vented portion is completely ISOLATED(blocked off from all airflow!). The hot air has NO escape! What kind of idiot designed this? How can you make vents that don’t vent anywhere? It’s literally worse than putting a wool blanket on your back, cause at least the wool can breathe and vent and regulate. I don’t mean to rant. I’m sure the pack will be good for some and obviously there are fans among the commenters, but I don’t see it. Also the OCD part of me couldn’t help notice the load balancing straps on the shoulders were wildly different lengths. For any bag with retail price over $100+, no, that’s not acceptable. Is it too much to ask from such an expensive backpack? I didn’t bother looking through the rest of the backpack. I tried for a couple of minutes to get it comfortable on my back and when my back started to sweat, I took it off and decided immediately to return. Disappointed. Geez, seems like every camping backpack has blatant problems, but for me, being a chubby sweaty guy in general, this made me realize that a sweaty hot back is the last thing I want to settle for. So uncomfortable. Just 1 minute of feeling that on my back made me say NOPE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice new feature-rich daypack from Deuter!
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2022
For context, this is my 5th Deuter backpack so I’m a bit of a Deuter loyalist. I have a 32L and a 22L but I find myself wishing my 22L had a bit more space and was a bit more comfortable with a fairly heavy load. I took a chance on this since there are very few reviews anywhere as it’s a new product- overall I think this is a great pack and I’d highly recommend it.

I just did a 5.5 mile “hike” on the treadmill with 20lbs loaded inside and after adjusting the various straps I got it dialed in and it’s pretty comfortable. A few noticeable features I like are the pockets on the shoulder straps- the zippered one fits a phone and the other holds your sunglasses and something small like a granola bar. The pack is light and a lot of the material is mesh or stretchy mesh like the water bottle pockets and exterior back pocket where you can stuff a jacket. I like the webbing on the back to strap other gear to and like the clips to hold trekking poles or an ice axe. The main compartment is one large pocket plus Deuter’s standard water bladder sleeve pocket which holds a 3L bladder. The back padding and shoulder straps were comfortable.

One noticeable difference from my other Deuter packs is this one has more narrow nylon webbing, smaller nylon clasps and smaller zipper pulls- this is likely to reduce weight and honestly for a 25L pack you don’t need huge straps and buckles. Another absent item is the integrated rain cover- usually under the bottom of the pack there is a zippered compartment with the rain cover. This pack does not include a rain cover- this cuts weight and presumably a bit of cost.

Overall I think this is a good feature-rich and comfortable daypack for a reasonable price.
